Desert Photo Project
Together with our good friends in the South of Morocco, Responsible Photography set up the 'Desert Photo Project'. Whilst local people were already used to seeing visitors with cameras, as well as the more serious photographers, not many of them had the opportunity to take their own photographs. Gail Ward, founder of Responsible Photography, first visited this southern desert region back in 1981 and since 1995 has seen the area slowly change. Development has accelerated very rapidly in the last few years. The desert region is stunning, but there are huge environmental issues and, like so many other places in Morocco, the advances of tourism are bringing a mix of changes and benefits, some good and some not so good. In 2012 a new road was built, which, in Gail's opinion, now threatens the area. It was hoped the 'Desert Photo Project' would help some of the people in this region understand issues that could impact on their homes and environment. Whilt it was great fun using the cameras, there were a few challenges with all the sand which everyone had to be very careful of!
The Desert Photo Project was an opportunity for some of the people we know to have fun with a camera. It is their opportunity to take their own photographs and - really important - the opportunity to photograph their home, their environment and their life, through their own eyes.
